(opens in new tab)

City Sprouts is a nonprofit organization that started in 1995, dedicated to growing healthy communities through urban agriculture, education and connections. The organization works with Omaha-area residents, volunteers and interns to grow vegetables, flowers and herbs using environmentally responsible and sustainable gardening techniques in their community gardens and urban farm. City Sprouts develops and conducts educational programs that teach all age groups how to garden, cook, preserve and more. They work with the community to build local food systems, improve community health, empower neighborhoods and strengthen economic viability and sustainability. City Sprouts provides a comfortable setting where people of diverse ages and backgrounds can learn and grow together.

  • Soil Health and Conservation Initiatives: Field days, workshops and other events to support urban growers in accessing technical assistance, conservation practice and improving soil.
  • Community Garden: Planted each year by City Sprouts staff and volunteers and is open 365 days a year. The garden is free and open to the public to harvest.

How has the organization made a difference?

Since 1995, City Sprouts has cultivated healthier communities through urban agriculture, education and partnerships. What began as a neighborhood community garden has grown into a thriving Urban Farm that produces more than 15,000 pounds of fresh produce.  Each year, City Sprouts engages hundreds of community members through urban farming, volunteer opportunities, educational programming and food access initiatives. With the support of more than 925 volunteers contributing over 2,100 hours annually, City Sprouts creates opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in growing, harvesting and sharing fresh food. The Urban Farm currently produces more than 15,000 pounds of fresh produce each year, helping provide healthier food options while strengthening community connections. Thousands of children and adults have participated in their programs, gaining hands-on experience in gardening, healthy eating and environmental stewardship.

How can people get connected/get involved?

City Sprouts hosts more than 800 volunteers every year. From garden clean up, to mini construction projects, to events and beyond. No experience is necessary, and tools and gloves are provided if needed. City Sprouts host volunteers every Wednesday night at the farm. For more information visit: https://www.omahasprouts.org/garden-crew
